While it is acknowledged that Sparta perfected the art of hoplite warfare, and we have evidence through Xenophon, Herodotus and Thucydides of the orginization of the army, its tactics and capabilities, I have been unable to find much information on the logistics and support components of the army of Lakedaimon.
Xenophon's Cyropaedia, on the surface relates the life of the founder of the Persian Empire, but could the details of support components he writes of in reality be more relevant to Aigislaos' Spartan army (his first hand experiences)?
Secondly, do we have any sources that speak to the type of medical/surgical personnel and techniques that would be part of a Spartan army?
How much would "philosophia" or science be allowed to intrude into conservative Spartan society?
And finally, can the medical instruments found at Epidauros be assumed to have been available to a Spartan iatros?
