Strangely Alexander Issus wasted some days in Naupactos. And Rustico is wondering
why.
In every case transports had the time for two sail and now they are carring
the third and last group. So 2/3 of the army has already joined the Legio III
in the camp at Molycria. The last detachment of maniples from Legio XXIV
(300 HI; 200 LI; 300 cav; and some baggages) is expected to arrive tomorrow.
While the warships of Classis III are blocking Naupactos harbour, legionaries
and Rhodians auxiliares are restoring from the siege they suffered. And Aetolians
appear remaining in their city. All is calm at the sunset and also during
the night.
Suddenly the sunrise shows Aetolians deploying for the battle in the plain
in front of the castra.
"Roman! You come here to fight! Do it now!"
In the plain the long front of the Aetolian phalanx is forming. 9,000 hoplites
close togheter with long sarisse and small round shields, deployed on 12 rows.
On their left wing (sea side) a detachment of 2,000 peltasts and 1,000 archers.
While on the eright wing are further 2,000 peltasts and 1,000 archers plus 1,200
cavalry.
3,000 skirmishers are before the phalanx and further 500 cavalry are in rearguard.
"Come on Roman! I'm here to fight a true battle, no tricks, only the valour! Or, if you haven't got the hearth to fight, go home and forget Achaia!"
