Empress Dowager Zhang, (d. 1442) historically one of the most powerful of all Ming empresses, and mother to the Xuande Emperor, Zhu Zhanji. After the Xuande Emperor's death she became Grand Empress Dowager. She is the highest ranking woman in the Xuande Emperor's court.

Hu: First Consort of Xuande Emperor. Xuande deposed as Empress Hu against the will of the Secretaries and to the direct opposition of his mother, the Empress Dowager, as Hu had not borne the emperor a male heir. Zhang took Hu into her residence and insisted that Hu, whom Zhang selected as the emperor's principal wife, take precedence over the Empress on every ritual occasion.
