Hatmehit, The First of the Fishes, was considered a mother goddess and was originally represented with a fish upon her head. Some texts refer to her as a fish goddess others as a dolphin goddess. Very little is known about this particular goddess and she is mentioned only in passing in most accounts. Her figure as a fish was found on the Nome standard of the 16th Nome of Lower Egypt and the Nome was called the Fish or Dolphin Nome so it may be assumed that she held a prominent role during the early Pre and Early Dynastic Periods. When the ram cult of Banebdjedet became popular in the 2nd Dynasty, she was alotted the status of the wife of the ram-god and any prominent role she may have had steadily decreased from that point.
