Middle Earth Who's Who: The Valar
Ilúvatar (=The One; =Eru) created first the Ainur (=the Holy Ones; ='angelic powers'), each coming from a part of his mind.
Together they created Eä (=the Universe) and Arda (=the World,= 'the Earth'; lit. 'the realm'). But the Ainur did not participate in the making of the Elves and Men (=the Children of Ilúvatar).
The Valar are those of the Ainur who chose to live within the confines of the World.*

ManwëA: also Súlimo, Lord of the Breath of Arda. Greatest of the Valar, Lord of Arda and the air.

VardaA: Lady of the Stars, also called Elbereth by the Elves. Her power is in Light.

UlmoA: Lord of the Water. Next in might to Manwë, he dwells alone and doesn't stay at Valinor.

AulëA: Lord of the substances that make Arda, he gives them form.

YavannaA: also Kementari, Queen of the Earth. Her love is for all that grows from the Earth.

NŕmoA: usually refered to as Mandos. Keeper of the House of Dead, the Halls of Mandos, that lie west of Valinor, he knows what is to come.

Vairë: The Weaver: she weaves what has come to pass into webs that clothe the Halls of Mandos.
|
|
Irmo: also known as Lórien, from the name of the place where he dwells, fairest place of the world. He is the master of visions and dreams.
|
Estë: the gentle healer, also gifted with rest.
|
|
|
NiennaA: sister of Námo and Irmo, acquainted with grief and sorrow, from which she draws pity, wisdom and hope. She dwells in Mandos, or west, upon the border of the World.

Tulkas: Astaldo, The Valiant. Warlike and of great speed and strength, he is also friendly.
|
Nessa: sister of Oromë. Also fast, she delights in dancing.
|
|
OromëA: also Aldaron, the Huntsman of the Valar. He loves the forests and all that lives within it. He is a great hunter of monsters and fell beasts.

Vána: "the Ever-Young", young sister of Yavanna, she cares most for flowers and birds.
|
They live in Valinor, unless otherwise indicated.
nameA: these Valar are the eight most important ones, the Aratar, or "High Ones".
*To note that Melkor, one of the Ainur who went to Arda, was, after a while, accounted among the Valar no more.
