On August 5, 1100 A. D., Henry I, William the Conqueror's youngest son was crowned king of England, after the mysterious death of his brother William Rufus 3 days earlier. Henry I is best known as the father of Empress Matilda, the rival of Henry's nephew, King Stephen, who succeeded him and reigned through 19 years of civil war, and as the grandfather of Henry II.
