Fremont Indian Site Revealed
Waldo Wilcox, a rancher in eastern Utah, revealed the existence of ancient
Fremont Indian sites on his land. The site dates back to approximately 1000 AD.
"In all, thanks to Wilcox and his persistence in keeping people out, archaeologists are now documenting
225 Fremont cultural sites that stretch for roughly 15 miles along Range Creek on the old Wilcox Ranch
in Carbon and Emery counties."
Artifacts include granaries for corn, beans and squash, rock art, and pit houses. The latter are
shallow holes reinforced with stone and covered with bark or wood.
The Fremont Indians lived on the Colorado Plateau from before 1000 AD to approximately 1250 AD.
