The Court of Gold was exposed when a 1950 earthquake destroyed part of Santo Domingo church and monastery. The Qoricancha was the principal temple and observatory of the Inca Empire. It contained life size golden statues, a gold lined fountain, a gold altar and other treasures - none of which survived the conquest in 1532.
