I've always heard that, by the third and fourth centuries, a large contingent of Germanic troops were stationed in Britain, particularly on the Wall . . . is that a myth? If not, it surely seems handy for those Saxons and Angles who were planning on emigration, if the local bobbies were of the same clans!
