... and also my Rivendell... is nothing but the neighbourhood of my childhood home. Which is still the home I come back at times, and my dad is actually filling it with pools and fish and flowery arches and waterfalls! He's seen one Monet too many, lol! But anyway, it's in a tiny village among the hills, and just beyond the fence are... woods, woods, woods. When I was a kid, they were magical, full of wonderful and scary things. When I read LOTR, I entirely recognized the place. In part it was the Shire, but the magic in it was entirely Elvish. We still use to come across a glade or see a particular slant of light among dark clouds in the mist and say "Oh, this is so Elvish." Since I now live in a big dirty city, the place has acquired an added magic.

So I think it was very difficult to capture this on film. I agree entirely that Jackson's vision was too "unnatural". He should have made nature *different*, correctly, because Elves *are* alien after all, but with the "difference" of nature seen through a child's eyes, or through a dream. That's very difficult to achieve.

And then, for me Lothlorien also had an incredible romantic quality, because Cerin Amroth was the place where Aragorn and Arwen "plighted their throth", and since I was a kid and had no idea what that meant, I imagined all sorts of vague but thrilling happenings, lol! And I didn't find that magic in any A/A scene in the movie, except - Future Arwen in TTT walking in mourning through the trees. That is "my" Lothlorien and it gives to me exactly the feeling of what is being lost, both for the world and for her. It brings tears to my eyes even now.
