Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, was the youthful owner of the Primavera. He patronized both Botticelli and Michelangelo.
The personages, events, and ledgends that fascinate the imagination are Lorenzo the Magnificent; his handsome, talented, popular younger brother, Giuliano; the beautiful Simonetta wife of Marco Vespucci, favorites of the Medici circle; and the poet Politian (Poliziano) famous befor he was eighteen as the translator of the Iliad into Latin.
At the elaborate chivalric tournament, refered to as The Joust (La Giostra) of Giuliano, staged by the Medici in the Piazza Santa Croce in 1475. Giuliano won the jousting prize dressed in silver armor with a standard depicting Pallas Athena painted by Botticelli. Simonetta was the tournament Queen of Beauty. Lorenzo's standard bore the motto "Le temps revient". Many spectators must have felt their city was entering a marvelous springtime under the guidence of youth. Lorenzo was twenty-six, Giuliano and Simonetta were twenty-two.
Politian was twenty-one and wrote a long romantic poem 'Stanze per la Giostra di Giuliano de' Medici. The ledgend that Giuliano and Simonetta were lovers was already in the making. That spring proved to be a trecherous season. By the next April la Bella Simonetta died of consumption. April, 1478, brought the muder of Giuliano by enemies of the Medici.
