IMPERIVM
NEWSĐ
PTOLOMAEUS OBJECTS TO THE TREATY
While the peace is slowly returning in the east, Aegyptus is claiming that
Roma violated her treaty with Aegyptus. Ptolomaeus is very upset because he
recognizes the treaty approved by the Assembly forces Antiochus to revoke any
claim on Aegyptian lands, but some of those lands will not be returned to Aegyptus.
Roma is taking control of the whole of Asia and Palaestina. Aegyptus is losing
its empire despite Her active participation in the war.
King Ptolemaeus has declared that, if Roma will not return his lands and help
to liberate Cyprus, he will reject the treaty. Threatening to stop the grain
supply and tax payment to Roma starting in Sextilis, the Aegyptus fleet left
Gaza and currently it is sailing to Asia to embark the Aegyptian auxiliary
detachment.
Aezani Razed to the Ground
The city of Aezani rejected the treaty signed by Antiochus and approved by
the Assembly of Roma, refusing to become subject to Roman Law. Since they offered
resistance to the incoming legions, Marcus Aemilius Scaurus replied by assaulting
and razing to the ground the city. The latest reports indicate that the cities
of Aezani and Dorylaeum agreed to an alliance to resist Scaurus.
Gauls Accept Asiaticus’ Offer
After a very long and exhausting negotiation, the migrating barba-rians accepted
the offer from Marcus Claudius Asiaticus to settle in Narbonensis. The whole
provincia is celebrating the narrow escape. Mulcibellix is offering some land
in his territory to help Asiatucus in finding suitable land for the settlement.
Violence in the New Jewish State
In Tiberias, the local Jewish population has clebrated its happiness for their
new freedom with a feast. But, some hotheads triggered a small riot by casting
stones at the withdrawing Seleucid troops, finally being able to vent their
anger and frustration at the long occupation. Only the enviable self-control
of the Seleucid commander helped to avoid the possible clash such violence
could have led to.
Is this a forecast of the future in Palaestina?
Turning Point in Agrigentum Investigation
Incredible! All of the evidence in the case of the stolen temple goods is
leading to the priest of Apollus himself. Praetor Quintus Fabius Maximus extracted
a confession of the crime from Demetrius. He sold the artifacts of the temple
to pay his gambling debts and, when Agrigentini discovered copies in the temple,
Demetrius accused a poor Roman usurer for the sacrilege.
The people of Agrigentum are calling for an exemplary punishment for this sacrilege
that put their city at risk.
Hispani Rebels Defeated at Septimanca
In a bloody clash on the bank of the Dorius flumen, the pro-praetor Lucius
Urgulanius Longinus stopped the run of Hispani rebels. In a bloody battle more
than 5,000 rebels was slashed. Only about 700 of them were caught wounded.
The legionaries, following literally the order Longinus issued, not only did
not treat their wounds but helped the enemy to die with daggers. How wild is
the revenge of soldiers forced to march over the whole of Tarraconensis to
settle a rebellion.
In the end 2,700 hispani escaped from the massacre cursing and swearing vengeance
on Longinus, they are now reported fleeing towards the Gallaecian border.
Numidia News
While Masinissa is recovering from his wounds, the war is in progress in Numidia.
Mauretanian armies are moving towards Cirta. The capital of Numidia is near
to being besieged. Numidians appear paralyzed, unable to respond without the
leadership of Masinissa.
Slave revolt in Calabria
In a slave compound close to Tarentum a group of gladiators revolted, killing
their owner and guards. Then they incited more gladiators attacking other compounds
and freeing the gladiators inside. At last report, 4,500 rebelling gladiators,
led by a certain Maronues, are moving towards Bruttium, inspiring great fear
in the country.
OOC - Revolt in Calabria, see Rule 8.3.2. No trade. No estates and factories
may be sold. NO income from estates and factories in Tarentum.
City news
Row at the Civil Court. In a busy round of charges and counter-charges, Quintus
Cornelius Cocceus has accepted to judge any case related to Tarraconensis tax
and confiscations. Many citizens are now waiting the celebrated trial and are
betting on its outcomes.
Despite all expectation, the religious tax called last month by the Pontifex
Maximus did not trigger riots in Roma. The backbiters are insinuating that
Caius Livius Drusus called that tax to cover his expenses for his ‘big
event’ of the month... just to gain some more cultural prestige.
The large majority of Senators already expressed their opinion that Decimus
Junius Pompeius deserves the honour of the triumph while the counter proposal
of Palus to grant him an ovatio has been soundly rejected. The debate is leading
to a very hard confrontation between the Senatus and the tribune.
The news that Lucius Urgulanius Longinus adopted his nephew has lead to a
new gossip in Roma. Witticisms are abundant about his lack of skills to make
children. And after the recent play in Roma, many are commenting about his
sexual preferences and his lack of Roman virtues.
Gossip is also spreading about Cnaeus Ulpius Sisenna and his new love. A beautiful
girl named Patritia Bona whom he is hosting in his villa in Gades. Sisenna’s
wife is very upset at the rumours and evidently fainted upon hearing the rumours
for the first time. The gossip mongers are reporting that she has vowed to
avenge her husbands unfaithfulness.
Prodigia
Lightning hit the impluvium of the Domus Aemilia. Marcus Aemilius Scaurus’ crocodiles
are charred and his familia is still in shock.
