Pridie kalendas Iunonias (31 May)
Rosalia:
On this day, in military camps, the standards of the legions would be brought out from their sanctuary and displayed with wreathes of roses. Little more is known about this military rite. During the month of May it was common to visit the tombs of one's ancestors and place wreathes of roses on them; roses being a common offering to the dead as roses symbolized eternal spring. This military rite may have therefore have been for fallen comrades. In practice, soldiers were buried on the battlefields where they fell and their families built a shrine to them at home where their souls might come to rest. It may have been seen that the souls of fallen soldiers would rally to the standards as well and thus be present to be honored by the legions.
"Sprinkle my ashes with pure wine and fragrant oil of spikenard,
Bring balsam, too, visitor, with crimson roses.
Tearless my urn enjoys unending spring.
I have not died, but changed my state of being."
~ Ausonius, Epitaphs 31
Ludi Saeculare:
A nighttime sacrifice was made to the Moirai (the three Fates) in the Campus Martius, followed by theater shows. One-hundred and ten matrons would also perform a sellisternia for Juno and Diana on this night.
