Jus thought I would post what I know about the vikings exploration of the lands west of Iceland and Greenland, most likely thought of as Newfoudland or northern Canada now.As of right now it is presumed that the vikings point of insertion into North America was through a settlement at L'Anse Aux Meadows in Newfounland where the remains of many longhouses in the Icelandic and norwegian tradition of the period were excavated and has been now designated an authentic historic site.In the saga of the Greenlanders it was said the North American continent was originally spottd by a man named Bjarni Herjolfsson on a expedtion exploring the Greenland sea. After Bjarni came back he told Eirik the Red's son Leif and Leif Eiriksson set sail to the lands Bjarni had described.Although it did take about 15 years after Bjarni saw the coast of this land that anybody thought that it existed or thought to sail there at all. From what I read in the saga of Eirik the red,the settlers traded with the local eskimo, but one day a Bull came charging out of its pen into the clearing where the trading was being done with the natives, and scared the natives away(the vikings had brought their livestock with them and the eskimo I suppose had never seen a Bull or a Cow for that matter)the story goes on to say after that the natives didn't return for three weeks, and then one day they natives came back with a fleet of canoes and a army of native warriors, the vikings numbers were too small so they retreated and eventually left the settlements. In total I read the vikings were only in America for 10-15 years or so.Please anyone else who is endowed with more information add to what you can,I would be much apprecitive.
