    Sulla (138-78 BC) was the first general to march on Rome with an army demanding ultimate power. Like Caesar, he was a famous general and bitter enemy of his former mentor, Gaius Marius. Sulla's grab for power and the proscriptions he instituted in becoming dictator of Rome almost led to the death of the young Julius Caesar and strongly influenced Caesar's later career. ...

    Right you are Aulus. I just spent a futile half hour looking for a non-diphthong upsilon transliterated as ‘u’ and the best I could come up with was a couple of Bithynian kings named Prusias (Prusias. That’ll teach me to argue with a classicist. Heraklia, I agree that Sulla was definitely a violent, nasty fellow. Still, his ruthless executions conducted while he was addressing the senate, didn’t exactly bring in a bunch of loot for his supporters. That came later. This particular act of ruthlessness is harder to explain away. Sure, it put everyone on notice, but it seems extreme even for Sulla. I still think that the fact that there were Samnites involved somehow colored Sulla’s reactions.
