The New Varangian Guard (or NVG) are one of Australia's largest medieval re-enactment groups and are a stout bunch of chaps (and women) to boot. Back in my re-enactment days I have skewered a few of them with spears and clocked in the head a couple with axes - and then shared horns of beer with them in the feast hall afterwards in true Vaholl-style.

They research their re-enactment very carefully and it's good to see some of their material turning up here. I remember the first time I saw them marching to the battle field en masse - in their red tunics with their long axes and led by an guy bearing an icon - and recall it as one of those magic moments you get every now and then in re-enactment.

Here is another excellent page on the Varangian Guard by another NVG member, Steve Lowe.
    Cheers,
    Thiu
