    It occurs to me that another type of metaphor, in this case, even more compressed than a riddle, is the kenning, in which a compound word substitutes for a more familiar object.

    Kennings are what I most remember about Anglo-Saxon poetry and can serve as trivia questions in themselves. For example, "whale road," "sea horse," and, perhaps more difficulty, "files' leftovers."
