    TENOCHTITLAN

    By A.D. 1400, the Aztecs had developed an extensive civilization that covered central and southern Mexico and the Mexican Gulf Coast. Tenochtitlan, the imperial city of the Aztecs, was the heart of a vast kingdom of city-states that paid tribute to their ruling center-the home of some quarter of a million people. The marketplace alone could accomodate sixty thousand.
