I've read & heard so many things about reconstructing an ancient Greek calendar, that almost all the things said become contradictions to each other.
In the meantime of arguing who is right & how it should be done, I've decided (over a year ago), to super-impose the Athenic festival calendar on top of a modern-day calender, so that the first day of Gamelion starts on the first day of January and Hekate's Day is always on the 29th of each month. I use the Full moon of each month as the marker for that month's major festival.
Yes, I know.... I've already gotten a big chunk out of my butt chewed out from those who (academics /recons) who insist that my methods are "unorthodox" and that they are not going to work.
But for those of us who are concerned about having a workable calendar that is easy to follow without needing 2 or 3 other calendars around to follow the festivals, it works. While everyone else is losing time on how to carefully plot the dates on a calendar, I'm already celebrating the festivals!
Is it right? wrong? Doesn't matter as long as I remember the basics: Athena on the 3rd, Aphro, Herm, Herk, Eros on 4th, Artemis on 6th, Apollo on the 7th... and so on EVERY month!
Hey, it works for me and I never even have to worry about which day I'll celebrate what. I already know, I've also entered all these dates into my palm pilot and have incense ready in my travel pack incase I need to be away from home! It works every time!
Hope I haven't disappointed anyone!
