I read somewhere that Harald Hardrada brought back a large gold ingot from Byzantium--so large that it took several men and horses to carry it--and that he had it with him at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. According to the story, Harold Godwinson confiscated it after the battle and had it with him at Hastings. William then confiscated it after Hastings and took it to Normandy when he returned there for his triumph in 1067. Does anybody know if this story is true or not, and if so, what happened to it after William took it to Normandy?
