This beautiful early Edo-period screen is unusual in its rendering of the interior space. Clothes horses are placed either side of a screen decorated with a huge fan. On the horses are kosode, with a piece of cotton cloth, a haori and a hakama. In the centre is the owner of the garments: her hairdo is redered in the 'Chinese wheel' style. To her left is a trainee courtesan with longer hair, who plays the shamisen and wears a long-sleeved child's kosode.
This page has beautiful photos of edo-period kosode and Noh costume.
