that has a readable text and wonderful illustrations is The Ancient City, written by Peter Connolly and first published in 1998. Here's a brief excerpt: The architrave round the outside of the cella (that is, inside the colonnade) was decorated with a frieze carved in low relief, showing the annual procession in honour of Athena, the Panathenaic procession. This is a continuous frieze, 160 metres (525 feet) long and about 1 metre (3 feet 3 inches) high. It shows an extremely high standard of workmanship and consistency of style. It seems odd that such fine work should be designed to be largely hidden in its position high up under the colonnade. There are numerous reconstructions and details of the Parthenon, the frieze, and the statue of Athena. Check it out!
