Cimber had accompanied Casca as they winded their way through the empty streets after leaving the domus of Caius Cassius. The two companions spoke barely a word. Their thoughts were fixed on the task at hand.
Casca broke the silence of the night with a whisper. "Tillius Cimber, do you know where you are going?"
Cimber was taking the long way home. He tried to play it off as though he were too deep in thought to mind, but truthfully, he was not prepared to be alone. It would be a long night alone with his thoughts. His conscience was already nagging at him.
His reply was simple and reflective. "Our cause is just."
"You speak the truth, Cimber. Rest your heart, there is nothing else that can be done. He will be king and safely on the march with his legions if we don't act while the opportunity presents itself. Our names will go down as the liberators of Rome."
With a nod of his head and a faint smile, Cimber took the fork in the road that would take him home. The words were just what he needed to hear. He would cling to them through the night as he washed away his fears in unwatered wine.
