I've been thinking about this subject a lot lately, as I'm trying to do some work on it for school, and it has been beating me up. Edward the Elder cannot be the first king of a united England, yet his son Athelstan may be. But after the reign of Athelstan, the Viking presence in Northumbria is too constant and influential for the area to be considered an actual land under the legal dominion of an English king.
