I believe that one of the main reasons that Stenton's work is so hallowed is that he wrote this book 50 odd years ago. There has been many works on many different aspects of Anglo-Saxon society, but Stenton's work was simply ahead of its time. Even today we have little, if anything, better than Stenton's Anglo-Saxon England for an overall survey of the period.

Also, there seems to be little bias on the part of Stenton. Scholarship has come a long ways, and every single author still will ALWAYS have his/her own littles biases. But some authors are worse than others at this. Many older histories, especially pre-1950 were written in a very nationalistic manner. History should not be nationalistic in nature, it should be as neutral as possible, which is something that Stenton does quite well at. If one wants a patriotic view, look no further than Freeman's History of the Norman Conquest.
