I envy your having seen these statues. Are there any pictures of the other blocks? I have seen descriptions of something on the opposite side of the "pillar". Are pictures of this available?
To add insult to injury, I saw them again recently ;-) after they have been cleaned.
Over time, since the original discovery, the statues had acquired a shiny black patina; they were taken to be conserved during 2003 and now they are back, all cleaned up and with tool-marks visible from their original construction. Unfortunately they are now on display in the caldarium of the Roman baths, with new 'moody' spotlighting (ie dark, and difficult to photograph without a tripod or flash). I do have photos, but nothing very great.
The original pillar had four sections, presumably arranged on top of one another, presumably with the smaller ones above the larger ones. We don't know how the different facves of the sections lined up, clearly each section of the square section pillar could fitin one of four ways. These sections were split in half and used in late antiquity to reinforce the riverbank quay on the Isle de la Cite. Of the four sections, one is preserved nearly intact (we have both upper and lower halves, with only a small piece missing at the join) and of the other three sections, we have only the top half of each.
I will check over my photos, other descriptions in books, and post a summary of the other faces.
