I second Brunanburh. Maldon is only important because it is the ONLY OTHER battle before 1066 that we have any detailed account of. As a pivotal battle important to all of England, it doesn't qualify. The vikings won, pillaged the locals, and sailed to another spot. It was like all the other defensive battles alluded to in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of which we have nothing more than a name (usually), the leaders' names (often) and the statement of which side won.
