I'll say it isn't very accurate: but very well drawn and dramatic. Wagner would have loved it; so would Prince Valiant ! (the movie has lots of those wild horned helmets: makes those vikings look like a mob of aggitated bulls =D)
That's what Varangians looked like, according to the period artwork, as reinterpreted by Angus McBride for Osprey publications. (Byzantine Armies 886-1118 - Men-at-arms series) The dude with the red outfit is in ceremonial dress uniform; the middle guy (who looks like the late Robert Shaw with a beard) is dressed in the military equipment for battle: his leather harness is not clearly understood, but shows up in the art of the period, while his arm and leg protection is called "splint armor", made from laced together strips of iron or wood or bone (in this case, clearly iron); and the Russ warrior to the left is a mercenary in Byzantine employ. It was these mercenaries from the 10th century who soon became the crack troops of the emperor and were placed in the palace as his guard and military police. Later, at the end of the 11th century, the Varangian guard were (mostly, some think) Englishmen who had fled the Norman conquest; thus many would have been former huskarls and thegns. Their appearance would have been almost idential to these fellows.
