by Faustus Sulla
I smiled once again at Quintus Servilius Nerva's remark, though this time the smile was genuine. However, it was the smile of a wolf barring its canines; a smile of a predator.
For I was not fooled by the amateur attempt at flattery. I dealt with far more experienced fools in that matter. However, to call Nerva a fool would be less than fair, for he was merely a beginner. The man should have been in the elections for Quaestor, but that meant nothing. The Senate appointed Quaestors every day, it seemed.
"My thanks, friend," I replied. "Both for the tribute, and the vote!" I noticed a flicker of mistrust and anxiety fly across his face. "You see, I like to thank all those who vote for me. I consider it the highest of compliments.
"I truly must go now, Quintus Servilius. However, I am having a bit of a party at my home this evening. Would you care to attend? There shall be plenty of all your wants and desires..."
I awaited the answer, glad that I had had some time with my father before his passing: for no one knew how to give a good party like Lucius Cornelius Sulla.
