My late husband told me of the Birthday customs as he knew and celebrated them with his family.
Every tenth year was a grand blowout with lots of friends, foods and liquors. Sherry for the ladies and geneveer for the gents.
On other in-between years, the day was much simpler, a nice dinner and the high light afterwards was the recitation of poems written in honor of the birthday person. Some raucous and some sincere. Lots of laughter going on as the genever poured strongly.
