So, Arminius returns to Germania to strenghten its garrison.
So, who were Varusī auxilia?
Were the five cohorts and three alae German?
At least -the main part- of the cavalry was Roman or Gaul. They tried to escape to the Rhine.
Lets say that Augustus sent German auxilia back from Illyricum to strenghten Varusī army. This would make Teuteburgwald his -and Tiberiusī- error of judgment.
So, lets see;
Varus has legions about the strenght of 3 500 with him. this would give him 10 500 Roman infantry. To this we may add 500 cavalry.
Arminiusī five cohorts would be ca. 2 000 men.
So, Varus has 11 000 troops with some 3-4000 others.
Arminius would have needed some 8-10 000 other men than his own auxilia to be able to defeat Varus.
So,
11 000 Romans
4 000 miscellanous
versus
2 000 auxilia
8-10 000 German warband
