heh, I finally joined this group.
How many men died with Varus?
Velleius reports that the army in Teutoburg Forest comprised of;
-three legions
-three alae of cavalry
-six auxiliary cohorts
The nominal strength of these forces would have been ca. 20-22 000 men.
But the forces were probably veteran and we know that Roman forces were very often grossly understrenght. Sometimes, they were just half of the nominal strenght. These forces had seen heavy fighting and we must remember that they probably contributed detachments to Pannonia -to help Tiberius.
So, lets say the legions were ca. 3000 men each and that the auxiliaries were ca. 3000.
That would make the strenght of the army with Varus some 12 000 men.
