Both Belgium and the Netherlands declared neutrality at the start of WW I. However, Belgium was invaded by Germany as our history shows.
The Netherlands were spared that grief and after hostilities ended, the people opened their hearts and homes to many German children who had been facing starvation in their homeland.
When Hitler became Chanchelor of Germany in 1933, he called for the return of these children, most of whom had become fluent in the Dutch language. Hitler indoctrinated many with his philosophies and had them later returned to Holland and formed the neucleus of the Dutch Nazi Party. Some infiltrated the Dutch Resistance during WW II and betrayed many patriots to their deaths.
The Dutch soon realized a way of detecting these "false" Dutchmen. They insisted on everyone say the name of a fishing village near the Hague. The name is Scheven-something (I do not know how to spell it.) Germans and many others do not pronounce it correctly.
Thank heavens that those evil days are now in the past.
