Talaita, at the risk of allowing competition I'll tell you where I find the best resource for Avatars.. I make avatars too, have about 300 to date but no webspace to host them at yet. Then again, the more competition, the better choices for AW members!
Art Magick.com - really the best for online scans of paintings that I harvest Avatars out of. Keep in mind they mainly have pre-raphealite work only, but this can be a good thing, as the work is guaranteed to be not a living artist so now major worries for copyright infringement.. and besides, the Pre-Raphealite movement was famous for it's artists depictions of Ancient life.
I also personally search around for images from Movies and such, or in some cases doing a screen capture of my own DVD's for avatar use. But you have to make a note to visitors to advise them NOT to use these avatars for use anywhere except AW and definitely NOT to use them for any commercial use. Using modern or living Artists artwork or Film charactors is a bit risky, and possibly illegal in some cases.. posting a warning to prospective Avatar Users may not entirely clear you of any legal responsibility, but it is an effort. Honestly, this has never stopped me, but I also always offer a link back to the prospective artists/movie's site to offer credit, and if it is possible to get the artists permission to do so (as in the case of one old AS member, who got Amy Brown and J.Bowser's permission) then by all means at least try.
If you ever need any help, please ask.. and since you are taking PSP classes, perhaps you could write us a tutorial as well! Though there are already several, more are always needed!
