Cairetw,
would like to give a short informative post
regarding the local Laconian names of Zeus. In addition to that I would like to
ask if any other member known or has further information concerning that
matter.
In Laconia,
I found at list four cult names of Zeus. For the three first I can say that am
sure of their existence. All the cult names of the God are more less stand by
themselves, although, one has a relationship with the beloved Laconian
brotherhood of Dioscuri. Maia here you can find a fact for the connection of
Zeus with Dioscuri!
The names
are:
- Zeus Elephtherios (ZeuV
EleuqerioV)
- Zeus Ouranios (ZeuV
OuranioV)
- Zeus Ageator (ZeuV
AghtorioV)
- Zeus Lacedaimon (ZeuV
Lakedaimwn)
- Zeus Syllanios (ZeuV
SullanioV)
I must
state that couldn’t find any other resource about the cult name of Lacedaimon,
only in the Ernst Baltrusch’s book “SPARTA Geschichte Gesellschaft Kultur”, who
mention Lacedaimon Zeus with Ouranios Zeus.
Zeus
Ageator is the Holy-Father of Dioscuri and He was worshiped with Dioscuri in
Their common festival of Diavatiria (Diabathria). I will have more information soon!
Yours,
Nikolaos
Cleomenes
