The Domitius Ahenobarbus family was a Patrician family whose members achieved notoriety and success in the years of the Republic and the Empire. Their roots go back to Latium where they flourished in the Etruscan Period and their bloodlines included King Tarquinius Superbus the Proud. He was killed by an uprising led by his Nephew, Lucius Junius Brutus. Tarquinius was the seventh and last King. One of his last acts before he was deposed was his purchase of three prophetic books by the Sybil of Cumae where he deposited them in the Temple of Jupiter. Thus began the family tie with Jupiter Optimus Maximus. The Republic was started in 509 BC.
One of the earliest Domitian victories was in the Battle of Lake Regillus over the Latins in 494 BC, where their victory was promised by the gods, Castor and Pollux. A sign was given to them by changing the beard of their victor to red. Men of the Domitius Ahenobarbii were rough, harsh, arrogant and cruel. The family tombs have always been prominently displayed on the Pincian Hill.
Gnaeus' Grandfather was the great General Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus who had conquered Gallia Transalpina and served as Consul in 122 BC. Gnaeus' Father was Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus and his Mother was Porcia, a descendent of Cato the Censor. The marriage between Lucius and Porcia Cata produced four Sons and a Daughter. Theirs was an arranged marriage and there was little love lost between them. Lucius liked to involve himself in the affairs of the world, while his Wife liked to run the household and socialize with her entourage of aristocratic acquaintances.
Their oldest Son and Heir is myself, Gnaeus. I was regarded as the apple of my Father's eye along with my three Brothers, while my Sister Athena held the position of esteem with our Mother. To carry out my plotline, I intend to marry Dia Cornelia, one of the three Daughters of Quintus Cornelius Sulla, and hopefully the legacy of our marriage is about to unfold.
My Brother, Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, is a Senator. His future ambition is to hold a Consulship to keep up with the many political Consulships attested by our Forefathers. He also assists in the upkeep of our family businesses with the aid of our other Brother, Tiberius, also of the Senatorial Order. Quintus Dio, my youngest Brother, is a Senator. Being almost classified as the black sheep of the family, he cares little for political ambition and reluctantly does his part with the Domitii enterprises. I verified with him that his character prefers Bacchus and benevolence to the future prospects of the Domitius Ahenobarbus family. Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus makes up for the lack of political ambition in his youngest Brother. HA! My Sister Athena, who is married to Sextus Brutus Ninius, is in the process of obtaining a divorce. Unbeknownst to her Husband, he will be getting a lot more than he planned on receiving. HA! Athena spent many years with our Mother, but for many in Roma, remains a mystery about to be unfurled. I shall let her do the honor of telling you her story and that of our Mother. Suffice it to say, Athena shares many of the behavioral qualities found in me. Beware!
The many political successes in the Ahenobarbus family were due to the easibility of the men to switch sides when it suited them. My Ancestors were involved with with the Macedonian War, the sack of Corinth, the razing of Carthage, the Senate during the tumultuous times of the Tribunate of Tiberius Gracchus, the Jugurthine War and the Social War. During the latter time, I became personally acquainted with Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix and his family. Working for awhile under the Consul Lucius Licinius Lucullus, I received my military triumph after I assisted him in a successful invasion of one of the major cities in Pontus during the ongoing Mithridatic War.
The Domitius Ahenobarbus family is a wealthy Patrician family from the old school. Money had never been a problem for them. They really didn't care how they got their wealth, only that they got it. They own many farms, vineyards, and brothels, while holding interests in the importing business. They also own other real estate throughout the Empire, too numerous to mention. They are rumored to have been engaged in piracy for many years.
When researching genealogical tables for the Domitius Ahenobarbus family, I saw that a Lucius Domitius married Antonia Maior, which made the Ahenobarbus family related to Antonia's Son, Marcus Antonius, and later on Gaius Octavius. Along the way, a Domitius Ahenobarbus was the birth Father of the Emperor Nero. A Gnaeus Domitius married Hostilia, who gave him a Son called Lucius. This is real history and could provide a possibility for the future family tree of the Domitius Ahenobarbus family.
One last point, a Gnaeus Domitius won a naval victory on the first day of the Battle of Philippi in 48 BC, thus preventing Julius Caesar's troops from departing from the harbor at Brundisium. For this achievement, he was saluted Imperator. Being true to his Forefathers, he switched sides in politics when it suited him. Because he was a Commander of a naval fleet in the Ionian Sea at Pharsalus, Julius Caesar pardoned Gnaeus after Pompey's death. From there, Gnaeus went to form an alliance with Brutus, then to one with Marcus Antonius. When the time demanded it, Gnaeus became a follower of Octavian. One last note, in gratitude for his naval victory, Gnaeus Domitius repaired the Temple of Neptune after it was destroyed by fire.
In these histories, I've included my family's past, their present, and their possible future. The majority of my biography is based on historical fact, but a large portion of it is embellished with my own ideas.
