I recently came across an interesting-sounding book, has anyone read it?
Military Religion in Roman Britain
by Georgia L. Irby-Massie
This is the mini-review on Oxbox books:
Drawing on epigraphic and archaeological evidence, the author discusses the religion of Roman British soldiers and their interaction, in religious terms, with civilians. The complexities of Roman, eastern and Celtic rites and beliefs, and changes to them over time, are discussed. The influence of 'imported' Roman and Eastern cults on native belief systems, is seen as being especially significant. Concentrating on the second and third centuries, this is a good thorough discussion of the subject. 386p, 9 tbs, 1 b/w fig, 4 pls (Brill 1999). ISBN 9004108483
