Yep, atmosphere can make or break a scene (as I've found out many times, to my dismay!). One friend of mine even discards the sun and uses various spotlights to light his scenes. I tend to play down the ambient light a bit, as I find it sometimes gives scenes a grayish or grainy wash, but some folks are masters of it.
