Hello and welcome Lydia,
I am glad that we are going now.
Let me deal with our post retroactive: Monks did save some less 'christian' texts than Platon, for example Plautus, which I would counbt at least under 'wild' given the time.
Then Plato was used by the apologetics in the second and third century to show that christinity is reasonable, and having Plato as corrobation was quite helpful. Though this let to a few somewhat skewed views of auctoritas, but this is a diffrent discussion altogether.
I fully agree that Platon came down to ONE city to keep the whole thing personal. Personal responsability and ideal demands is a topic I would stress more when discussing the Republic. It always comes down what we would want ideally and where the problems lie personnally.
And we will meet some points, where Plato is so short on PC for todays liking that we must turn down his ideal demands in favour of our ethics.
