Sextus Domitius watched the Lady Diantha move about the bath complex. She was, if possible, even more radiant than when he first saw her. Today she looked happy and relaxed, even if an occasional cloud seemed to cross her brow. Sextus also noticed how the maid – What was her name? – kept looking anxiously about. Grinning, he continued to watch as Diantha moved closer to his location.
Moving towards her, he noticed her holding a piece of yellow ribbon. Directly behind her by now, Sextus leaned over and spoke into her ear, “I think the green would better suit you.”
Diantha turned her head and looked at Domitius, some surprise showing on her face. And some pleasure, Sextus noted happily. It seemed his attentions were not wholly unwanted.
“Domitius, what a pleasant surprise. But, I’m afraid you are mistaken, this ribbon isn’t for me. I was buying some new things for my daughter.” Yes, Sextus thought to himself, she was not unhappy to see him at all. She controlled herself well, but the signs were all there.
“What brings you here?” Diantha asked.
“I decided I was in need of some relaxation and peace. Where better to go than the baths? I thank Fortuna that when I arrived, my eyes were blessed with the sight of you, my Lady.” Noting the blush on her cheeks, Sextus decided to press forward. “Truly the gods must be involved, for they keep ensuring that we meet. I trust that these meetings will continue.” Sextus smiled at Diantha again. “I was just considering some fruit. Would you care to join me?”
Obviously torn, Diantha stood looking at Sextus. A long moment passed before the maid spoke up. “I had just mentioned to my Lady that perhaps a snack was in order. We would be grateful to join you.” A look of satisfaction crossed the maid’s face. But Lady Diantha was not so happy.
“I am not sure that is such a good idea,” Diantha began. “I am a married woman.”
“Come now, my Lady. We are in public. No one can accuse you of anything, and it is merely some fruit. Surely there is nothing harmfull in that. Would you deprive me of your company so shortly after receiving it?” Sextus moved almost imperceptibly closer and spoke a bit more quietly and intensely. “I would very much like you to spend a few more minutes with me.”
Clearly pleased by the invitation, Diantha finally relented. “Alright Master Domitius, but only for a few more minutes. I really must get back to my daughter.”
Behind her, Sextus noted the triumphant smile of her maid. I really must think of a way to thank that woman, thought Sextus. What was her name again?
