We have resumed at the botton of this page the two articles written in the past on the Cursum honorum of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and of Caius Iulius Caesar because they are very much useful to make one analysis about these two great roman duces.

Pompeius and Caesar are nearly contemporary, have only 5 years of difference and they belong to different families.
The gens Pompeia is of popular (plebea) origin and Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo (father of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus) belongs to the enriched bourgeoisie and possesses many lands and adhesions in the territory of Ausculum.
The gens Iulia instead is of nobilis origin, boasts a good role in the republican history but don’t figure in the five nobilis maiores gentes (gens Aemilia, gens Claudia, gens Cornelia, gens Fabia et gens Valeria).
Pompeius is a man predestined to the happening and Lucius Cornelius Sulla (dictator legibus scribundis and rei publicae constituendae)like him.
Sulla names Pompeius praetor at 26 years old and gives him the appellativum of Magnus (Great).
Pompeius has never been voted quaestor and aedilis curulis from comitia centuriata.
Sulla with this nomination makes an exception to lex Cornelia de magistratibus from himself emited in the previous year (81 b.C.).
This lex previews 36 years old the minimal age for the quaestor (magistratus minor) and 39 years old the minimal age for the praetor (magistratus maior).
At 29 years old Pompeius it is proconsul in the Bellum Hispanum against Quintus Sertorius follower of Caius Marius but it is considered privatus cum imperium proconsularis. In fact he never has not been consul but only praetor.
Pompeius becomes consul at 36 years old and in the secular republican history we can only remember similar episodes for Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Maior and Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus (Africanus Minor).
Caesar reached the praetura at 39 years old (13 years later than Pompeius) and the consulate at 42 years old (6 years later than Pompeius). He follows the normal previewed cursus honorum from the roman constitutionalis lex. Caesar not liked to Sulla (Sulla considered Caesar a future danger because he saw in him many Caius Marius).
Pompeius begins to fight cum imperium at 26 years old in Africa and after we see him always winner in the Bellum Hispanum, in the Bellum Pirathicum and in the Bellum Mithridaticum.
Caesar begins to fight cum imperium at 40 years old (in the 61 b.C.), 14 years later than Pompeius he accumulates great experience, reputation and honors during the nine years of
    Bellum Gallicum.
Before the explosion of the civil war therefore we have two grat roman duces with great military experience, with equivalent forces, armed and trained in the same way.
    WHY CAESAR PREVAILED ON POMPEIUS?
