    [The morning sun had barely begun lighting the Atrium when Heraklia, who'd retired in confusion after discovering all her vintage wines were BACK in the cellar as if by divine providence, woke up. Apparently she had retired happily in situ, since she was lying on a wool mattress near the triniculum covered by several shawls and blankets - Pyrex, ever thoughtful lad!!

    There's the breakfast party to attend, she thought, three-quarters still asleep - and I'll have to call off Gordianus, since whoever stole my wine, put it back. Tonight's the play of course. I wonder if Yngvar (my favorite Scythian goldsmith) has finished repairing my necklace? I'll walk to the Theatre Marcellus, it's going to be a beautiful, clear evening...

    Rising, Pyrex appeared like a spring mushroom, with a tray with rolls and a light watered Caecuban. He grinned.
    ]

    Pyrex: Mistress, I have good news and bad news! Which do you want first?

    Heraklia: [grumpily] Of course, the bad news first, good after!

    Pyrex: The bad news is . . . there are XIV strangers sleeping in your cellar after the party.

    Heraklia: [laughing] And?

    Pyrex: The good news is - I checked the wine myself before I locked up last night. Nearly half the amphorae had been emptied! Then this morning . . . each and every one of them was miraculously full again and back on the shelves!

    [Heraklia closed her eyes in invocation to whatever god or goddess had taken charge of her beloved wines . . . but HOW??]
