    THE VISIGOTHS

    Western Goths. The kingdom was based north of the Danube from Bulgaria eastwards.

    Athanaric

     

    376 - 378

    The Visigoths are defeated by the Huns in 376, and flee across the Danube to seek shelter in the Roman Empire. Badly treated, they revolt and ravage the land south of the Danube, killing Emperor Valens in battle. Peace was made and they were allowed to settle in northern Greece, in Thrace and Moesia, charged with defending the Danube.

    Alaric I

    Sacked Rome. Died following a brief illness.

    Ataulf (Adolphus / Ataulfo)

    Brother-in-law. Married Honorius’ half-sister, Placidia.

    Wallia (Vallia)

    Established the Visigoths in Acquitaine.

    Allowed by the Western Roman Emperor to settle in southern Gaul, they found the Kingdom of the Visigoths.

    The Visigoths settle in southern Gaul after pushing out the Alans. The Visigothic Kingtom of Tolosa (Toulouse) is founded.
