When a Roman boy was adopted into a Roman family, his name was to be completely changed. The adopted boy would take on all three parts of his new fathers name, but would keep his own clan name. Usually, at the end of his clan name anus would be added. As an example...
If I, Cornelius Aemilius Flavonius, were to be adopted by Marcus Publius Corniglius, my new name would be Marcus Publius Corniglius Aemilianus.
