What a very timely comment, Maria, I'm just re-reading my favorite book on Harold and the Conquest, David Howarth's 1066: The Year of the Conquest . The 943rd anniversary of the event is upcoming next month. Surely no historical cataclysmic event I've ever read of was more full of coincidence, irony, tragedy. Including the fact that all Harald Hardrada got was seven feet of English earth (he was supposed to be gigantically tall).
Perhaps we can get a discussion going about 1066 = truly a year of marvels - while we work with Alfred? And don't forget the angry brother, Tostig! (what a name)
