The saga of Erik the Red relates that, on a previous voyage to Vinland, the Norse were attacked by Skrælings, their contemptuous name for the American natives. The pregnant Freydis picked up a sword from a dead warrior and slapped it against her bare breasts. This extraordinary sight completely confounded the natives, who did not press the attack.
