I haven’t been able to find anything in English, but this is truly amazing news. Officials in the German county of Northeim (which just happens to be where I live) have leaked information regarding a sensational find in an undisclosed location near the town of Kalefeld (about 45 miles south of Hannover) in southern Lower Saxony . They are calling this the find of the century and say it is the best preserved ancient battlefield in Europe. The really amazing thing is that they are dating the battle to the 3rd century. Some ancient sources do mention campaigns beyond the limes in this period, but this is well beyond that point. Sources are saying there are over 600 finds thus far. This follows on the discovery of an Augustan era camp in Hedemünden a few years ago. There is to be a press conference from the archaeologists on Monday, so hopefully there will be more information next week.

In the meantime, there is an article in German here. You can see a video of the site here. That is worth looking at just for the realization that every one of those poles sticking out of the ground represents a find.

    Wow.
