With the economic and political upheaval taking place in 3rd century Rome, the province of Britain would have felt the repercussions, as public spending would have been curtailed in this uncertain time of Roman history. New constructions in Britain would have been put on hold and existing structures would have to suffice and unlike the parallel development in Gaul, the area of the towns encircled by the new walls was not reduced as town life went on much the same. Thus Constantius in 296AD not only made good the recent damage done by raiders from the north, but also encouraged new constructions in the south as confidence of the province returned. Much later when the north suffered further barbarian invasion and not only the Wall Of London but much of Britain was over-run by 367AD, Count Theodosius restored the situation and strengthened the town defences.
