From 80AD to 130AD great urbanization in Britain was seen, although some new Roman towns would naturally have out-stripped others and developed individual traits, in general the pattern was pretty uniform, each town had its forums, basilica, temples, baths, shops, private houses and its own urban water supply, near enough a template for modern town planning. Urban life flourished and no protective walls were needed in the peaceful part of the province. However the citizens of these fledgling townships demanded more security so town walls were constructed, but the dating of this development is very debatable, a few new towns, e.g. St.Albans, Winchester and Silchester already had defensive earthworks by the 1st century, but most of the others were fortified by the end of the 2nd century. Silchester, Cirencester, St. Albans, Caerwent and Exeter may even had masonry gates and towers.
