It was never accurately recorded the extent of the loss of life in fledgling Londinium in 60AD, but as a settlement it was destroyed by fire, the evidence for this has been discovered 13ft below the present day surface, east and west of the river Walbrook, on the slope up from the riverside bridge. The initial function and status of London, at this time, have still to be determined. Was it a military base that became a civilian settlement, or was it a planned town from the beginning? The virtual absence of any military artifacts in excavations suggest the latter. But there is no doubting London's developing role as a port and the central hub of a road system along which the Romans went deeper into the English countryside. London became a trading center of the Romano-British Province, its citizens familiar with dealings with manufactured goods from Europe and the Middle-East. A planned grid of streets at the heart of the city is evident, as well as a graveled market place at the junction of Gracechurch Street and Fenchurch Street. The rebuilt London, post 60AD enjoyed sustained peace and grew in size and prosperity, this is indicated by the locations of burial places, which under Roman Law had to be a certain distance from the settlement and as the years past, the burial grounds began to stretch forever outwards.
